A Glorious Day

Arm in arm, Audra and Conner walked down the sidewalk heading toward the shade by the art building. Overwhelmed at her good fortune to be beside him again after many months she blurted out, "What a glorious day!"

"Yes and the weather's nice too," Conner replied without so much as a glance in her direction. Thus was the mode of comunication between them. Much needed to be said, and much could not be said, so much was said without saying much. What to the casual listener had been weather chit chat translated far deeper for these two. Audra and Conner had said, 'I love you and this day is the most special I have ever had with a man,......And I love you too beyond words'.

Audra had never been able to communicate with any other human like that. Her career as a public school teacher had forced her over the years to speak in the concrete. Metaphorical speech was simply not in her professional toolbox nor was it needed to communicate with her children or husband. They simply would never have been able to understand. However, with Conner so much needed to be said that could not be said. So, as form follows function, they developed their own speach patterns. Messages of deep love were shared in the most innocuous manner. Thank heaven for language.
