This piece is made from buff colored earthenware clay. It was covered with thick coats of brown and black underglaze while still in its greenware state. A sgraffito tool was used to then carve out the woman. This "drawing through highlights" technique produced the result I wanted. You can really feel this woman as she lies alone in the dark, listening to Mahler's 5th Symphony. She was then bisque fired to cone 04. A clear coat of glaze was applied and she was glaze fired to cone 05. Click on any of the thumbnails below to see a close-up and read a bit more.
